As IPSIDD speech-language pathologists, we play an essential role in the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Speech-language pathologists, or SLPs, are often tasked with assessing the communication skills of individuals with IDD. We also aid the individual and their supporters in enhancing adaptive communication functioning. SLPs can provide a range of services and activities which include improving the following areas.
• Receptive and expressive language skills
• Functional reading and writing skills
• Early communication skills
• Social skills such as problem-solving, following direction and turn taking.
• Compensatory communication techniques and strategies, including the use of AAC or other assistive technology
• Speech production
Treatment typically encompasses a variety of techniques and approaches (Goldstein, 2006). Communication intervention for ID focuses on interactions that may occur within an individual’s natural environment to reflect social norms of their community. SLPs ensure that intervention provides ample opportunities for communication. (ASHA)
